What Is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is corrective jaw surgery for substantial jaw abnormalities in order to assist with the orthodontic correction of a malocclusion (bad bite). Many malocclusions are the result of an abnormal size of the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. These abnormalities could be the result of abnormal growth, a birth defect, or a traumatic injury. This surgery may be unnecessary if it can be determined that orthodontic treatment alone can fix the problem.

If a patient has been identified as a candidate for orthognathic surgery, we will compile a complete set of digital, diagnostic information. This will include x-rays of the head and teeth, photographs of the head and teeth, and dental casts. Dr. Bowers will use this information and work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to carefully craft a treatment plan that addresses all of a patient’s skeletal abnormalities and malocclusions.

Orthognathic Treatment Process

Orthodontic treatment that includes orthognathic surgery will use two steps of orthodontic treatment. The pre-surgical phase is used to move the teeth into positions that will allow the teeth to fit properly when the surgeon repositions the jaw. A shorter post-surgical phase of treatment is used to finely position the teeth as needed in order to provide an ideal cosmetic and functional result.
